Academy Awards?
When the song “It’s gettin’ hard out here for a pimp” from Hustle & Flow was performed at the 2006 Academy Awards, I hated the song, I mean I absolutely completely hated the song. I also thought about how later it was going to get really bad reviews. And then when the song was finished, I hear this THUNDEROUS applause. was it just me, or does it seem like all the white people in the audience were just clapping because they didn’t later want to be called racist by the black people who performed the song. Or, were they just trying to be polite.
AGAIN, totally not trying to offend anyone. I just read it on one of the reviews on the internet, and I was curious to see what everyone thought about it.
Or did you think that they actually enjoyed the song.
I don’t like listening to the normal geriatric picks for best song nominees , this was a refreshing change, and some long overdue recognition of rap music in film.
Maybe the magic of live performance didn’t translate through the tv screen. I have seen many plays live that I thought were awesome, only to watch the video and be sorely disappointed.
I was upset because I thought the Dolly Parton’s Travelin’ Thru was a tremendous song, and really good fit for Transamerica. I’m not even a country fan, but Dolly’s song was great for that film.

Well, I liked the song all right, so maybe they did too. Or maybe they were just relieved to see something out of the ordinary at the Oscars–it’s usually completely predictable. If they were clapping and really didn’t like it, I think it’s probable that they were more concerned with seeming “with it” than with not seeming racist–I would imagine most Hollywood stars are pretty comfortable with themselves in that respect.
Personally, I generally like hip hop music more for its sound than its message–after all, it’s a lot harder to be a prostitute than a pimp, but no one was talking about them. But that still doesn’t prevent me from listening to it–even though it’s sort of a guilty pleasure.
