would you be angry if your mother in law did this?

My mother-in-law decided to visit us for a week. She is an odd person, quirky and demanding, but she is my husband’s mom so it’s not like we can keep her away.

First, she claims she has a gluten allergy. I was cooking dinner and about to add soy sauce, but she stopped me and said soy sauce contains gluten which could give her a reaction. Ok, fine. So I leave out the soy sauce. But then the next day we go out for sushi and she sloshes soy sauce all over everything. wtf?

Second, she barked out commands to the baby. Like, “Roll over. Roll over. Roll over.” again and again. Like the 8 month old is going to understand this and respond to verbal commands. “Mom”, I finally said, “she isn’t a german shepherd.” She says, “I’m teaching her to roll over.” She somehow feels like she has to deliberately instruct the baby to do things because SHE wants to be in control. I’m pretty sure babies learn how to roll by themselves.

Then mom in law says she is going to feed the baby because she wants to experience it. Sure, I say. She proceeds, while standing up, to shovel gigantic spoonfuls of food into the baby. After three spoonfuls she declares, “I really need to eat MY breakfast, I’m too hungry to keep feeding her.” This was less than 2 minutes of effort. So I have to feed her the rest of the jar. I’m thinking, why not say you’re going to change her diaper and then wipe only half her poopy butt?

Insult to injury: my husband, daughter and I popped out during the week for an afternoon to do some shopping. We come back – and she’s folded all of my husband’s underwear and all of my thong panties. Especially about the underwear – would you be pleased or would you be totally horrified? What about the rest?

Parents for some reason feel they have the reason to step in even when the children are not their own. They have a hard time with the empty nest and when they have the chance to experience it again its just well pure hell for us. My actual mother did that to me for the longest time and did not actually start doing it till my second child was 4 weeks old and i finally drew the line which is what you have to do. The longer you let her walk all over you the more she will do it, and you need to just tell her to butt out and that this is your child and your family, even better have her son do it. He is your husband and her son and she needs to hear from her son that his family is capable of taking care of themselves.
i would be horrified and extremely annoyed. i would consider moving and not giving her the new address. lol

haha sounds like you have 2 babies in the house! i know where your coming from (i have the same problems) i think the best advice would be to smile and nod. they can be so frustrating and overbearing at times, and can make you so flustered! good luck with dealing with her!

Sounds very weird! I have a strange mother-in-law, too. Mine can’t stand any silences, so will ramble on and on and on and on and on and on and on about…whatever. And she repeats herself over and over and thinks that it’s appropriate to share intimate details about her sex life with my father in law, including his battles with erectile dysfunction (I’m sure, to his horror). She feels it appropriate to share this information even with her grandchildren (who are aged 6 months to 21 years) and mixed company. She treats her husband like an 8 year old, though his mental faculties are fine.

I just wish for you that you are in the same situation as me: While I have a very annoying mother in law, she lives 1250 miles away and doesn’t have the wherewithal to visit more than once per year!

    Not really my baby isn’t hers I can’t make her do something she doesnt want to. And Mabye I try to teach my daughter things by talking to her or showing her and repeating them. And about the food thing I would not really care i only have to put up with it for a week it’s my job to make my guest comfortable not the oppostite. The only thing I hate is when she tells me HOW to feed her and undresses her and takes the ponytails out her hair that’s what I get mad at.
