Not all of Mardi Gras in New Orleans is the giant street party you see on the news every year. That happens, but it is restricted to the French Quarter and mostly to about 7 blocks of Bourbon Street.

Mardi Gras is a family holiday for those of us who live here. We go to King Cake parties, balls/dances, and take our kids to watch the parades + catch beads.

If she is with her family she will have more of a local-type Mardi Gras than what you are concerned about.

How much does it cost to go to a Mardi Gras ball and which is the cheapest one?

Question

My girlfriend wants me to take her to a Mardi Gras ball. The problem is, I’m a college student, and haven’t worked since summer, so my cash is kind of tight. Anyone know how much it would cost to attend a Mardi Gras ball and what to wear? Some are cheaper than others I assume. Does anyone know which ones might be closer to my price range?

Answered by Key

You can’t purchase tickets to a Mardi Gras ball except for the Krewe of Orpheus (see http://www.kreweoforpheus.net/), and they are $ 135 per person this year.. As far as I know, all the other balls are by invitation only. Dress is formal. Tux for men and floor-length dresses for women. I’ve been to several (but not Orpheux) and, to be honest, they are mostly boring. They aren’t the kind of ball that most people think of. You only get to dance if you have a “call out” from a krewe member, and a call-out is only for one dance.

That said, there are some krewes that have large parties after their parades instead of balls. I believe that some of these are by ticket these days, but I don’t know which ones. For more information, go to http://www.mardigrasneworleans.com/.

You don’t say where you live, but most balls are the night of the krewe’s parade. If you are coming to New Orleans only for the weekend through Mardi Gras Day, you are limited in what you will be in town for. Check out the websites.

Answered by Jude

While there are a few Krewes that offer tickets to the public for after parties no one sells tickets to their balls. You either have to be a member of a Krewe or know someone in the Krewe who is willing to give you tickets. The Krewe of Endymion’s extravaganza would probably be the closest you could come to experiencing a ball, and honestly it’s really not like a traditional ball. Frankly, I think you would probably find a traditional ball kind of boring. Basically you watch people walk around on stage, watch people get presented to the King and Queen, and get to dance a little. Then if you want you can purchase tickets to the supper dance after the ball.

Here are two sites to check out: Endymion Extravaganza http://www.endymion.org/ExtravaganzaTickets/tabid/60/Default.aspx, Pygmalion Fest http://kreweofpygmalion.org/default.aspx,

What are the most beautiful places and fun places to visit in Europe?

Question

My girlfriend and I are visiting Europe for the first time! We would love to have some feed backs as to where we should go to have fun and places we can go to take beautiful pictures together! I looked up many, many places and my mind is just blown away. So many nice places, please help suggest some. Thank you!

Answered by Zarn

Consider Prague, try Paris (but be prepared for the smell), and check out Berlin.

Answered by Cait

I’m seconding Prague, and I never noticed any smell in Paris (unless you count numerous streetside crepe vendors), so I’m going to say to go to Paris. I would also HIGHLY recommend going to Brussels, Amsterdam, and Luxembourg City. Berlin and Vienna are also supposed to be amazing. London, of course, is fantastic, and if you guys like chocolate go to Switzerland and go to Cologne, Germany. Barcelona, if you can make it to Spain, is supposed to be pretty mind-blowing, as well.

Bah, there are far too many places to visit in Europe that are worth the time, effort, and money that I could recommend. Just don’t try to fit too much into too little time. If you can only go for a week, don’t go to more than 2 cities. In two weeks, 4 cities is the max. There’s just too much to enjoy in each city to justify staying for only a couple of days. Even smaller towns, like Trier in Germany, have had me going back 3-4 times to enjoy them some more.

Really, though, just pick a couple of cities and enjoy the culture and beauty you’ll be basking in.

Answered by Orla C

Ireland, but you’ll need lots of money. Paris, for sure. Barcelona. Lisbon and Porto. Rome, Venice, Florence, Siena, Naples. Prague. Berlin. Munich. Salzburg and Vienna. Copenhagen. Amsterdam, Groningen, Utrecht, Maastricht. Brussels.

Basically it boils down to how much time you have. I would suggest taking at least 5 days for every city.

Switzerland see the alps. have fun

Is there anything fun for an 18-20 age group to do in Windsor BESIDES drink and gamble?

Question

We’re from Michigan. I’ve been suffering from wanderlust lately and Canada is the most readily accessible cure. However, we (or most of us) don’t drink (some of us are still 18, anyway).

Anything fun to do in Windsor?

Answered by Sam

There is plenty to do in Windsor even if you’re not a drinker or a gambler. Kudos to you by the way…you will probably live longer, healthier lives than most of us around here. I myself am a University of Windsor student who enjoys social drinking and losing a few bucks at Caesar’s, but there’s plenty of other activities for older teens and younger twentysomethings.

Windsor offers plenty of shopping opportunities where you can find great deals, and products which may not be offered in the U.S. Although the city and surrounding towns in the county have numerous specialty shops and stores, there are two major shopping centres: Devonshire Mall and Windsor Crossings. The latter is considered to be “outlet”-type shopping, and features name-brand stores such as Nike, Adidas, Reebok, Tommy Hilfiger, Hugo Boss, etc.

The casino offers world-class entertainers, and depending on when you plan on coming to Windsor, you may be interested in what Caesar’s Windsor has to offer. Although you have to be 19 and over to enter the gaming floor and the majority of the restaurants, the “Colosseum” (where shows are held), and a restaurant as well as hotel is available for families of all ages. The city also has an art gallery, and many of the bars/pubs feature very talented local artists. Windsor has plenty of restaurants to please the pickiest of eaters, so finding affordable food at a great price won’t be difficult.

Anyways, there’s plenty to do in Windsor beyond the obvious…enjoy your stay!

I suffer from wanderlust-anyone wanna go with me?

Question

I’ve got the urge to pick up and move again. Any suggestions? I have kids aged 5,7,and 8 with me. I’m trying to get a real work from home on the computer type of job(getting closer) so that my wanderlust can be fulfilled.

Wow, LGBT actually came up automatically as a category suggestion. AMAZING!
hehe so did mental health
wanderlust is the desire to move-not settle down in one place- every few years i get a yearning to move on-but in the end, i always wind up drawn back to home-i just like to experience different places
anywhere we can run nekkid through the daisies

Why are modern teenagers so stupid?

Question

Last time I asked this everyone got mad, so let me just start off by saying that if you’re not one of the dumb teenagers then prove it by explaining why so many teenagers are dumb instead of getting angry about feeling like I called you dumb because thats how you think of yourself.

In an age where information is more freely available than ever, why do kids know so little?
What happens to the little kid running around with a wanderlust for knowledge that turns them into the brain-dead trend-following tv-watching teenager that represents the entire group?

Answered by Natalie Grace

well, i don’t like to think i’m stupid, however i can’t speak for every teen out there, so the ones that are stupid, i think it just comes down to ignorance, being stuck-up and bad parenting

Answered by Ry

and yet I know enough to write a research paper on why the Germans were complicit in the Armenian Genocide.

Answered by Bliss ❀

I don’t think all teenagers are stupid, I just think some of the choices they make are stupid. We’ve taught when we were younger that drinking, doing drugs, and smoking are bad, yet we still do it. I find that pretty stupid. Peer pressure is also a large reason why teenagers are falling into the trend following and watching dumb shows like Jersey Shore.

I don’t know how to cope with relationships and this ever-lingering feeling of anxiety and wanderlust?

Question

I find it difficult to have relationships with other people; on a friend level, but even more so on a romantic level. I’m the kind of person who gets along with most everyone, but I find it extremely difficult to open up to people and really connect with them on a personal level. However, when I do find the rare person that I can relate to, I get really attached.
As it’s been, I move countries every 2-4 years which has had a significant impact on my mental growth. Of course these experiences have led to many wonderful things, but I’ve also realized that the more I move, the more detached I become from people and my surroundings. I’ve become so inter-dependant, that sometimes even the slightest emotional interaction can make me feel overly-vulnerable. I haven’t been able to have a boyfriend, like most people my age, because of my fear of opening myself up to someone and commitment. At 16, relationships are usually not too serious but kind of seen as ‘practice’ for other relationships and for a bit of fun. But with me, I could never be in a relationship with someone unless I knew that I really wanted to be with them so much that I would be willing to sacrifice my vulnerability and really work at it. Otherwise, I get this constant feeling of anxiety; that I need to pick myself up and move on, from person to person, from place to place. In a way I kind of feel like I am constantly trying to run from myself, but on the other hand a part of me truly believes that by moving on I will just be one step closer to discovering myself. It’s such a contradiction.

This will be my second year at this school and after that my parents have applied for positions in Guatemala and Zambia. I only have one year left of high school so it would completely be my choice to decide to stay or to move. The thought of moving to Africa is absolutely thrilling, but I’m afraid that it may further distance me, not to mention academically stunt me.
Are these traits/feelings/problems normal? How should I cope with them? Would it be wise to finish high school where I am instead of abandoning the existing relationships that have finally begun to form?

Answered by Do it for Johnny! (Maddie)

Hello, dear.

First of all, let me just say that I understand completely where you’re coming from, and have often felt the same way myself. So to answer your first question, I’d say yes, it is absolutely normal to feel the way you do (not fun, but normal). I think the problem is that we mostly see two types of people in our youth society. One type of person is the uber-social, completely friend-oriented type who never has trouble finding friends or boyfriends. Then we see the other type, the kid with no friends and no prospects, basically, who spend all day in the corner pulling out their hair. There isn’t a lot of room for the person in the middle, so for you and I, it’s more difficult to feel like we are “normal”.

The first thing I can tell you is that being cautious is not a bad thing, to an extent. You have the right to feel completely comfortable, confident, and safe in your relationships, romantic or otherwise. You also have the right to experience relationships, though, and sometimes caution can be crippling.

To answer your second question, you will develop your own coping mechanisms over time. Let me tell you a little bit about mine, and perhaps you can apply them to your situation. I have a lot of bad history, and while I’m blessed with a few incredible friends, I’ve always struggled in romantic relationships and have yet to be in one. My problem is that I get physically ill when feeling uncomfortable, so I’ve literally had to leave the table the few times I’ve dated to calm myself down. But this is necessary and helpful; when you feel yourself start to get anxious, excuse yourself. Bathroom stalls and I have a very close relationship. Excuse yourself to one and just sit there for as long as you need. Breathe deeply through your nose, and out through your mouth. Picture a place, preferably in nature, where you feel completely safe and at peace, and focus on that for a while whilst you breathe. Once you’ve calmed down, have a little conversation with yourself. Ask yourself what it is that’s scaring you at the current moment. Think about it a little, and once you know, ask yourself what would make you feel completely comfortable again. Would blowing off the date and going home make you feel comfortable? Then think about that, and tell yourself, “You can leave whenever you want. You have control here.” Generally I’ve found that just reminding myself that I can do what I need to do makes for an easier environment, and I have yet to actually need to go home. Once you feel calmer, return to the date, and I guarantee you’ll feel better from that point on.

You know what’s best for you, so follow your instincts when it comes to whether or not to go with your family. Yes, Africa would be an incredible experience. But it sounds like you’ve had several other incredible experiences, and maybe what you need most is a little stability. Moving around your whole life is hard, no doubt about it, so perhaps staying where you are and establishing some solid relationships would be just what the doctor ordered. You might also consider doing a little soul searching – some solo traveling or returning to a place you once lived where you feel you have strong roots. And remember, with all the methods of communication we have these days, don’t feel like you can’t develop close relationships because you’re afraid of leaving them behind. The strongest bonds are never broken.

I know this sounds cliche, but you’ll grow into yourself and your comfort zone. As time goes by, you’ll meet people who you can just open up to, and I understand that can be hard. There’s a lot of pressure to date, have a boyfriend, have a perfect relationship, but you’re young and smart and ambitious, and no one said you had to fall in love just yet. Cut yourself some slack, and things fall into place. Promise.

- Be well

You needed to consume all the remaining fats and meats in your home because of the upcoming Lenten fasting. Over time, it kind of degenerated into a big party. Many of the elements of Mardi Gras/ Carnival such as the parades, costumes, balls, music, pageantry, etc. are attractive to gays, so it is not unusual that a LGBT group would sponsor one.

Mardis Gras is the “feast” before the “fasting”. Its a party that occurs on Fat Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. Its the Three Day Period before Ash Wednesday.

Question

Okay hey guys Natalee here. So I have to write a paragraph for school… heres the prompt….

“Write an explanation of how the author uses language perposefullly to fevelop conflict of the protagonist. Suppor your explanation with details from the text. This should be a well-developed paragraph.

a. use direct quotes
b. show knowlege of characterization
c. show your ability to pick powerful words, figurative language.

Heres the short story…. “Raymonds Run”

http://www.nexuslearning.net/books/Holt-…

And heres my paragraph… (Be as mean as possible) Please edit!!!

Characterization and Word Choice in Raymond’s Run

In the short story, “Raymond’s Run” by Cade Bambara the author uses language to
develop conflict of the protagonist. The protagonist in this story is Hazel Elizabeth Deborah Parks or as called by the older kids “Mercury” because of how fast she can run. She also has the nickname “Squeaky” whose voice earned her that nickname. Running is Hazel’s life, its all she can ever think about. Running has brought out the confidence and bold Hazel. But sometimes her confidence gets her into trouble. For example Hazel says to Gretchen, the new girl who is her biggest running competition, “I always win cause I’m the best.” This quote shows the confidence in Hazel, but when Hazel says this anger rises in Gretchen and she starts to head to Hazels older brother Raymond who is mentally retarted. When anyone tries to mess with her brother Raymond she gets very upset, she is very protective and shows her kind and loving side towards her brother. For instance she says in the beginning of the story, “And a lot of smart mouths got lots to say about that too, especially when George was minding him. But now, if anybody has anything to say to Raymond, anything to say about his big head, they have to come by me.” This quote shows she is tough and she cares so much for her brother Raymond and would do anything for him, even if it involves having to beat someone up with her skinny arms and lanky legs. “That’s right Fatso. And the next word out of anybody and I’ll be their mother too.” Hazel says to her ex best friend Mary Louise. This quote also demonstrats Hazels bold and toughness in the story. The climax of the story is when the race is in progress. When the racers are neck in neck their feet pounding on the ground each step getting closer and closer to the finish line. But then as Hazel glances over she sees Raymond was running for the first time with his own style. As Hazel is watching her brother she tears past the white ribbon in victory. In conclusion, when Hazel talks back to Mary Louise and Gretchen this gets the two girls angry making Gretchen want to beat Hazel in the race even more. Hazels boldness and confidence is a great thing but can get her into trouble at times. But, her kindness and love towards her little brother Raymond may show who Hazel really is as a person

Answered by ғoх!

Okie, I’m going to fix a few sentences and a few spelling errors.

“The protagonist in this story is Hazel Elizabeth Deborah Parks or as called by the older kids ‘Mercury’ because of how fast she can run. She also has the nickname “Squeaky” whose voice earned her that nickname. ”
~These sentences are complete sentences, yes, but don’t you think the first one is a bit flat?
The “or as called” part doesn’t seem to flow just right. I think you can fix it by keeping the first part and then merging it with the sentence about her being called Squeaky.
–Example: The protagonist in this story is Hazel Elizabeth Deborah Parks, who is also known as “Mercury,” because she’s a very fast runner, and “Squeaky,” because of her high-pitched tone.

“Running is Hazel’s life, its all she can ever think about.”
~Alright, “its” needs an apostrophe and there should be a semicolon after life.
In the sentence right after this one, “bold” should be changed to “boldness in Hazel.”

“This quote shows the confidence in Hazel, but when Hazel says this anger rises in Gretchen and she starts to head to Hazels older brother Raymond who is mentally retarted.”
~You need to have a comma after the second “this.” Instead of saying “starts to head,” just go with “heads.” “Raymond” should have a comma before and after and “brother” should have one after. “Retarted” should be “retarded.

“The climax of the story is when the race is in progress. When the racers are neck in neck their feet pounding on the ground each step getting closer and closer to the finish line.”
~Combine these two sentences with a comma. And then, after “neck-in-neck,” put a comma and then another after “ground.”

Alright, there are a few more places that need some work…
-After “upset,” there needs to be a semicolon.
-You use the word “bold” quite a bit. Maybe you could look into some synonyms for it.
-After “Bambara”, there should be a comma, and the same after “author.”
-No comma is needed after “short story.”

“That is so ridiculous. First of all, why is he making efforts to reach out to the Muslim [world]?
“People have done a lot more and not gotten a Nobel Peace Prize, but as far as the people in leadership positions and in power, he’s doing a lot more. He’s doing what no one else is doing, and that’s kind of what the Nobel Peace Prize is about.”
Heather Stout, Salt Lake City, server and student

The award “sends a message to the world that our leaders, and we as a people, are serious about working for peace.”
Allan Smart, Salt Lake City, vice president of the Gandhi Alliance for Peace

The Nobel committee has appropriately recognized “that President Obama in a short time has reinvigorated diplomacy, improved our country’s stature in the world community, and revived hope for peaceful resolution of international issues.”
Scott Matheson Jr., Salt Lake City, a professor at the University of Utah’s S.J. Quinney School of Law.

The President is right to see the award as a “call to action — both an affirmation and an inspiration for nations to work together to reverse nuclear proliferation, address climate change, eliminate terrorism, and end armed conflict.”
Scott Matheson Jr., a professor at the University of Utah’s S.J. Quinney School of Law.

“Obama deserves credit for convincing much of the world that the United States is a nation that can once again be trusted with global leadership. This might just say how important it is that the United States does fill that leadership role.”
Michael Minch, Draper, Utah Valley University director of Peace and Justice Studies

“The gold medal might hang heavy around Obama’s neck as a standard upon which all of his future actions will be measured. There’s no doubt that it will now be something of a burden.”

I’d also get some black cloth to drape over the black ones, you can get pretty inexpensive fabric at WalMart. That way you don’t have to worry about smudges and dust. Don’t know if this would affect how your articles are displayed or not, but you wouldn’t deal with the dust/smudge issues. Good luck

Am I going to be fat forever?

Question

I am 29 and I want badly to lose weight but I’m so scared that I’m too far gone, too old, etc. It sounds like I’m making excuses but is it even possible for someone to lose a substantial amount of weight at 29? People tell me I look small, but I’m disgusted with how I look. I’m only 5’6″ and I weigh over 140 lbs. Maybe it IS lack of willpower but I am bored to death and I think that boredom is making me fat. Lately I have been bored to death with my life, and I get depressed easily. When I’m profoundly depressed, I just lose my appetite completely and food nauseates me. this happened last fall and I lost 20 pounds within a couple months, and it is a miracle I’m still alive. But, when I’m just angry, tearful, or emotionally depressed, I turn to food. today is my last Saturday off for the next three months and I am going crazy because there’s nothing to do but sit at home. My life consists of home, and work, and I get depressed because I am so bored and lonely. I know that the cause of my weight problem is emotional. I’m from Florida, and I used to have a wonderful figure… when I lived there, whenever boredom or depression would strike, a walk on the beach would cure me. Now I live in High Point (North Carolina) and I am going crazy, there’s nothing to do in this town but rot. When I get frustrated and cry because it’s Saturday and I’m trapped at home, I dry my tears and grab the platter of tacos, and grab the McDonalds fishfilet, and drown my boredom in food. (I don’t drink because I’d surely become an alcoholic, because of my tendency to self-medicate and alcoholism runs rampant in my family) I am bored to death, and food has become a sort of drug to me when I’ve been crying or sad, I forget what was bothering me so much.
I would like to play a sport that I really love. I used to play soccer but I don’t know anyone around here my age that would play with me. I used to be really athletic, I used to ride horses, swim and I even achieved the rank of second-degree blue belt in taekwondo… but the problem is money. In November, I’m going to go abraod (to Spain) for some career training and every penny I earn goes to my trip (I work two jobs). My gym membership is 10 dollars a month but going to the gym is torture. I keep telling myself that I have something to look forward to in November (I’ve wanted to go to Spain all my life). But, the day to day monotony and loneliness is making me mental and eating crap is the only craving that I can give into. I have tried to give it up but I just go into withdrawal like an addict. I am so sick and tired of being fat and ugly and I want to lose the weight in time for my trip. I don’t want to be fat when I go to Spain because everyone knows all Spanish women are beutiful and I don’t want to stand out as the big fat hogger from melbourne. I’m so scared that it might be too late, that I’m too old.
It’s Saturday, and a beautiful day, and I’m trapped at home, bored and lonely… and then I have to work again on Tuesday and school starts in a couple weeks. I’ve had no vacation and i am grateful to have finally found a second job, but I’m stressed out because all I do is work like a dog and rot at home.
How can I lose weight when I’m 29 and have become dependent on food, out of boredom? I’m so sick of being a fat pig

My size one best friend thinks she’s fat??

Question

My best friend named Emily is a size one and thinks she’s really fat. I keep telling her she’s insane, but she refuses to listen to me. We are both 14 and have been close like sisters since like first grade. She is a really self-consious person, so I know she’s not only saying this about herself to hear me tell her that she is a living toothpick. She is really beautiful, and and she just doesn’t see that in herself, it really frustrates me sometimes. Recently we went out to dinner at Ruby Tuesday’s and she went to the bathroom in the middle of dinner. I went with her because you know, I guess girls aren’t capable of finding the bathroom themselves…anyway, while she was in the stall and i was waiting, i think she threw up. I sort of heard her gag and when she came out, she wiped her mouth. Could she be bulimic? This is the first time I think I’ve heard her throw up. Could it have just been my brain playing tricks on me or should i get her help?
How can i help her gain self-confidence and see that beauty in herself? Should I flat out ask her if she’s bulimic? Please help me…
How could I get her parents alone to talk with them? I mean, whenever I see her parents, she is with me. It would be kinda awkward for me to call her house and ask to talk to her dad or something…
I’m not 100% certain she even threw up though, I don’t want to seek help if she doesn’t have any problem. Oh my, I love her soo much. I think I’m getting my first migrane…

Let me reassure you that this is small mobile home of only a living room, kitchen, and two bathrooms. We used to have a bedroom but we
had to turn it into a bathroom because I couldn’t fit inside the little bathroom.

Question

I adopted this beautiful cat from the local SPCA center on Friday. She is extremely loving and loves to lay down or be held. The shelter said she was fine when they handed her over and all I know is that she had a litter of kittens 4 months back.

I brought her home and she was still lazy. We kept joking on how she was fat but I don’t think she is. It looks more like a pot belly. I gave her a nice bath and dried her off softly and then this smell happened. She didn’t shit or pee on the floor but it smelt like it. I thought she passed gas maybe? It happened the next day too that same awful smell. When I checked her crap there was no worms (she did have diarrhea though) but when I put her down from picking her up I found a worm. She has also been eating a lot.

She is currently residing lazily in our unused guest bathroom. Where on 3 different occasions I have found blood spots that belong to the cat. I checked her and can’t find any sores or wounds. Im really worried about my cat Cheshire, please help!

Summary of her symptoms:
-Pot Belly
-difficulty breathing
-decreased activity
-licking a hell of a lot
-sluggishness
-exercise intolerance
-diarrhea
-constant hunger
- there were also adult fleas but they were already dying due to her advantage application given to her before the SPCA handed her to me.
I did call the SPCA (4 different times!) and the lady rudely told me “No Refunds, you signed a contract”.

Im not asking for a refund I just want my cat to get better!

Just what is it you think the government is doing to be “in alliance with the oil companies” on this? Do you want the government to slap on price controls? Were you driving in the 70′s, when people lined up for gas for hours, and you had a hard time getting gas at all for awhile, and wondered if you’d even be able to get to work where public transportation wasn’t available? Or are you too young to remember that?

I have a hard time blaming the oil companies when I see all the SUV’s and large pickup trucks driving around, and I don’t feel too sorry for the person who says they spent over $ 75 filling up their tank – my Honda’s tank, dead empty, doesn’t approach that, and I can probably drive farther than the SUV on a full tank.

Good grief, don’t you conspiracy theorists ever get tired?

Do you think the problems at oil refineries are fake just to drive up gas prices?

Question

Isn’t it strange how so many oil refineries are suddenly having problems? These problems are seem to be synchronized and suddenly maintenance costs at these refineries have become a reason to drive up oil prices? Yet big oil is making record profits,

Mind you, the governments are the ones that make the most on a gallon or liter of gasoline – with their various taxes and excise taxes.

But the more we spend at the pumps, the less we spend at the stores, malls and restaurants. So everybody loses … except big oil.
For some people driving a car is the only option. What if you live in a city that does not have public transit coming out to your residence, and the city is not exactly bicycle friendly (i.e. snow, no sidewalks, narrow roads etc). You still need to get to work or school. So in a sense we’re punished for driving to work to earn the government tax dollars.

Is Brian David Mitchell Crazy & What Should His Sentence Be? Elizabeth Smart Case!?

Question

The verdict was just read, GUILTY! Do you think he is really crazy? If a religious zealot, is it crazy to believe in an odd religion?

When Elizabeth Smart was first taken, there were 3 of us activist that considered and went public with this scenario. It was Ted Gunderson a retired FBI agent, Flora Jessop a former FLDS child bride, now Director of Child Protection Project and myself. I was the FOR KIDS SAKE rep for Utah 1996 to 2001.

The state agencies in Utah and several in the press, thought we were crazy and out of bounds! In Jon Krakauers book, “Under the Banner of Heaven”, chapter 4 covered the Elizabeth Smart case. In the index to Jon’s book, you will note my name as a source.

I believe there are others like Elizabeth, not kidnapped, but forced into such unions, living in rural areas, Utah included! The question is, who is looking into similar cases?
I want opinions, because some think he is crazy! Some think believing any religion is crazy too!

I got my cookie thank you, I don’t need your praise, I only asked for your opinion. The verdict is read, not the sentence, do you even care?

Maybe someone will give you a medal. Or a cookie.

He should get the sentence the crime warrants.

EDIT:
Since you only post rhetorical questions with body text containing cut-and-pasted articles and links (in clear violation of the Y!A TOU), nope, I don’t particularly care to read your rants. I mistakenly thought this was a legitimate question, not a self-serving PR posting.
You’re Mr. For Kids’ Sake, why don’t YOU know “who is looking into similar cases”?

Oh, yeah, people I have spoken to do care. There are a lot of good people out there just like you.

Have a nice day.

What do you think about me doing a daily opinion blog about the rape of Elizabeth Smart?

Question

First of all I hold Ed Smart in contempt because if he had been careful and didn’t employ known homeless than Elizabeth Smart would not have been a major target for pedophiles. Further, I don’t think that her parents did enough to protect her and I don’t think that the fact that they had “several children” and “this was an oversight” is a justifiable excuse.

My blog is going to be called, “Daddy don’t let him do that to me: Could Elizabeth Smart’s rape have been avoided if her parents exhibited some discretion.”

So what do you think? It certainly cannot reverse what has happened but it can show other unaware parents that protecting your children against pedophiles isn’t a joke but a valid concern.

The Smart case is the best example of parents turning a blind eye. Our LDS faith teaches us that we need to be proactive yet we wait till the last hour to act. Why?

Answered by lindsey p

why, does your opinion of it change on a daily basis?

Answered by Chris

Some of the fault is hers.

“So to help other children in the future, I’ve put together a list of things Elizabeth could have done to escape her captors:

1. Walked away.
It turns out that Elizabeth was held at knife-point and was as close as 10 minutes away from her home at times throughout her 9-month ordeal. Here’s an idea: walk home. Or if you’re a gimp, change “walk” to “hobble” and the same rules apply.

2. Don’t use wigs, sunglasses, and phony accents.
If you’re trying to break free, cut the bullshit and remove the disguise when you’re in public. If your captor walks away from you at a party and starts drinking beer, it’s a pretty safe bet he’s not a prophet. What are you clinging onto?

3. Don’t hang out at parties.
It kind of blows the credibility of the whole kidnapping story if you’re seen at a party. Next thing you know you have to make up some crazy shit about being brainwashed.

4. Anything.
Almost a year before Elizabeth Smart was found, there was a 7 year old girl named Erica Pratt who was kidnapped, bound with duct tape around her arms, legs and eyes, and left in the basement of a building:

Did she lie back and take it? Hell no. She broke a window, gnawed through her duct tape, and escaped. She was back home the next day before her parents could enjoy the solitude of having one less kid around, and she’s only 7 years old.

So keep these pointers in mind if you’re ever kidnapped and you’ll turn up at a party somewhere. Or a glove compartment.”

I, too, was always naturally very skinny, and i used to drink all the diet drinks WITH meals trying to gain weight, but I just never did. I’m sure you’re quite young, but don’t worry, when you reach 40 (the day after tomorrow), you’ll catch up. Just don’t worry about it. It’s her problem. I do hope you’re not anorexic, but if your mom says she’s just jealous because she’s overweight, that’s the answer.

I have Celiac Disease also and spent many many y ears being SUPER skinny! My friends thought i was anorexic too bc since i had Celiac, I was always running to the bathroom after I ate! They thought I was going to throw up!
Well I will tell you this, if you are sticking to your gluten free diet, in time you will gain weight. If you are in a normal BMI, I wouldnt worry!! Trust me I have gained 20 lbs since going GF after being diagnosed!!

There is really nothing else you can do except tell her the truth. Maybe she just doesnt get it. maybe she’s just expressing her anger towards you for her own insecurities and issues. Maybe she has her own issues with food? Maybe she’s anorexic herself and hoping you are so she can have someone to latch on to? I m just throwing out suggestions!!

If you are seriously concerned, please speak with somone in your life, clergy, school counselor, another friend, etc. You ar enot alone and you should not be harassed or intimidated.
I hope it works out!
Best of luck,

Why do people make fun of fat people, but yet, they feel sorry for anorexic people?

Question

Seriously, why can’t they stop pointing and laughing at obese people or mordibly obese people and reffer them to McDonalds and eat a big mac.

But however, they feel so sad for the anorexic girls. Why???
By looking at my picture avatar, i need to lose a few pounds myself. lol.

Why are Anorexic people treated with sympathy and support, but Obese people are harassed and made fun of?

Question

Both are the result of eating disorders are they not? I would say having addictions to unhealthy food is just as bad as someone obsessed with eating little to nothing, why do people have heart for anorexic people & feel bad for them etc, but when they see a fat person they’re disgusted with them?

I’m not either by the way im just asking cause the thought passed my mind

Answered by TifaL

According to my friend, he thought that it is because anorexia is commonly known to be a disorder while obesity is just like, oh that person is fat and they brought this upon themselves. However, anorexia is the same too and people fail to acknowledge that. People think that anorexia is like this thing people develop due to emotion trauma or abuse, but they don’t realize obesity is similar, just that people get fatter. Maybe people just feel fatter people are more disgusting due to society’s image of the ideal body. Anorexia are more towards that ideal image while obesity is nasty. Who knows? This question is seriously really interesting.

Answered by Geoff

I could be wrong, but I think its probably a social phenomenon. I mean, girls are “supposed” to be thin, according to our society, so in that regard it makes sense that they wouldn’t be made fun of as much as obese people (not that that’s fair or justifiable). And, really, they almost certainly wouldn’t purge or deprive themselves of food if they were made fun of for it, so that seems to indicate to me that anorexia is more accepted than rejected by society (assuming it isn’t actually a neurological problem but a psychological problem).

Also, consider gender. I’m not sure if obese girls are bullied any more or less than obese guys but anorexic guys (they do exist) are easily the most alienated of the bunch. No one can really understand why a guy would be anorexic because it goes against everything society tells us we should be. Obesity, on the other hand, is at least understandable considering we all have the motivation to eat, so it would make sense that obese girls get bullied less than anorexic guys.

Answered by desperatehw

Good question. Probably the answer is that our society views the overweight as ugly and self-indulgent. It is not okay to stuff your face until you become too big to fit the spaces provided for average sized people in our culture. So we punish those people by (at least) shunning them and (at worst) the behaviors in your question. Whereas anorexic people are pitiful, skinny, starving, obviously something is wrong but they are not ugly, greedy, pigs who can’t push themselves away from the table. This is NOT my personal viewpoint, but one I have seen time and again as I have taught various grades levels, and later on, practiced law. Obesity seems to be the one universal prejudice shared by all races and religions, the one acceptable “ism” in our country, where those who aren’t obese actually feel hate for those who are, and somehow don’t realize that is not acceptable.

Whew. You tapped a vein here, haha.
