Give your opinion for why Josh Hamilton blew the Home-Run Derby?

Question
It was so much fun to watch in the first round. I thought he blew out his arm to trying to hit thos home-runs. I actually got so mad I wanted to break my TV and never watch the home-run derby again

He tired himself out in round 1. In my opinion it should be total number of home runs wins it all. There’s no reason a guy should hit 28 homers in 1 round and lose the home run derby because he didn’t hit enough in the final round of hitting. Hamilton could have stopped after round 1 and Morneau hitting all 3 rounds wouldn’t have caught his homerun total.

In baseball, streaks happen. That’s it.

Go hit 30 homeruns and tell me how you feel.

How good can Josh Hamilton of the Cincinnati Reds be?

Question
He’s gotten off to a very good start despite missing the last three years due to a drug problem. To watch him, you’d swear he hasn’t missed a beat. I just fear that he will fall back on drugs again and blow it all. Remember, Steve Howe of the Los Angeles Dodgers. He never was able to beat it.
Answered by Mets4Life
Josh Hamiliton was a star prospect for the D-Rays I believe.
Due to his drug problem’s, which you stated he’s got into trouble and haven’t gotten much playing time.
He has ressurrected his carreer in Cinncy where he’s splitting time with some players.
He’s a solid player if he gets playing time and doesn’t get into trouble.
Hamilton is a 5-tool guy.

Elijah Dukes, for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays suffered the same problem.

He can be GREAT! During spring training, we kept hearing how scouts were raving about his all-around play, and that he had amazing bat speed and plate coverage. What is unbelievable, is that he had played only a handful of games SINCE 2002!! I am not sure he even played in Double-A, and if he did it was just a few games. Last year, Hamilton played in the New York-Penn league, which is Low A ball, rookie league.

He missed all those years, and games, and never lost his skills, it is mind-boggling. Not only is he playing well, but in the majors! I am really happy for him, it’s one of the few good stories we have heard lately. He is still young enough to have a long career, and I hope he is able to put his troubles behind him.

Answered by Deke
You never can tell what’s in a man’s character. All you can do is hope for the best. Let’s hope he appreciates how lucky he is to get a second chance.

I guess we’ll have to see how he will hold up for a full season, after coming back from 3 years of drug addiction and family problems. I think he might put up respectable numbers despite splitting time with Freel in CF. As long, as he can put this thing behind him, he’ll do fine.

Who is better, Josh Hamilton or Matt Holliday?

Question
Me and my friend fight about this all the time. Who is a better overall player, Josh Hamilton or Matt Holliday? In 2008, Hamilton was an MVP candidate with a .304 batting average, 32 homers and 130 RBIs. In 2009, he had a lot of injury problems and he just wasn’t right the whole year. At the All-Star break in 2010, he is an MVP candidate again with a .346 batting average, 22 homeruns and 64 RBIs so far. He is also very good in the outfield, no matter where Ron Washington decides to put him. Holliday is a different story. He has had some good years, especially in 2007 when he should have been the NL MVP. He HAS had some good years, im not going to lie. He is a great hitter. Although, when you look at his numbers other than 2006 and 2007, they are good, but not great. He also cannot survive in the American League. If you don’t believe me, look at his stats with the Oakland A’s and his interleague stats. They aren’t pretty, trust me. He also can’t play the outfield in clutch games. He blew the NLDS for the Cardinals in 2009 and dropped a routine fly ball in the All-Star Game yesterday. I think Hamilton is better without a doubt, what do you think?

matt holliday is one of the most overrated players, he showed that in the homerun derby and the all star game commited an error. he plays just for the money and ill take hamilton all day over that trash.

Hamilton may have more talent but tough to say who’s had a better career mostly because of Hamilton’s off the field issues. Holliday has heated up recently for the Cards and I think he’ll be pretty good over the long haul but Hamilton probably has more talent.

I would say Josh Hamilton.

Who else besides me saw the HBO Real Sports piece on Josh Hamilton the other night? I think the interviewer ?

Question
was too light on him. He never really asked what drugs Josh was into. Josh said cocaine, but I have a strong suspicion that Hamilton smoked crack. That was never brought up. Did he use Heroin also? Also, he was suspended for so many years in the minors. I mean, how many chances can you give to an athlete. These guys are so pampered it’s absurd. He received a 4 million dollar signing bonus and blew it all on drugs, yes, he did help his family out too. Personally, I don’t see this guy lasting in the majors for very long. He looked very edgy during the interview, like he could snap at any moment. The lure will be too great on him and he will get back into drugs, in my opinion. You agree?
Answered by Miles D
apparently they test him 3 times a week so if he starts they will catch him and then he should go to jail.
Answered by Rangers fan ♥s Josh Hamilton
Your entitled to your opinion & I respect it but I disagree with it on so many levels. For the fact he has 3 daughters & I don’t think he’d set a bad example for them. Its pretty much fact he smoked crack and did any other drugs he could get his hands on. Props to him for cleaning up his act, becoming more of a family man, and proving anyone can be an inspiration. Also hes drugged tested 3 times a week so it would be hard doing it during the season and I’m sure he would be tested during the off season. Him getting back on drugs is highly unlikely.

An addict to any drug is an addict and will always be an addict, alcohol is a poisonous drug, as is cocaine, (in all its many forms) and heroin in all its many forms , and morphine, in all its many forms.

A person, good ballplayer or not, that becomes an addict to any drug, will always be an addict. Their lives are lived day to day. Today I didn’t relapse, is always a badge of honor, for any addict.

Please do not tear down, their fragile, day to day existence.

It doesn’t make any difference to an addict, what drug was abused.

All addictive drugs are bad. Should we be questioning the degree of badness. Put out a kindly and forgiving hand and help these people to achieve their day by day triumph over not using.

Well I said I was going to take a break from Y!A because of school but I had very little homework today so here I am! (That’s surprising with all PreAP classes…lol)
And like Rangers fan, I’d just like to say that you are entitled to your opinion; just as I am entitled to mine… And my opinion is DEFINITELY a little different lol.

Anyway, to answer your question, I didn’t see it, but yeah, he did smoke crack, I think he did heroin, he probably did anything and everything out there. But geez, let bygones be bygones.
He’s been clean for quite a while, he gets tested two or three times a week, so there’s literally no chance he could be taking drugs. I’m sure he’ll be tested in the offseason as well.

I see him lasting in the majors for a long time yet; he’s only 27 and he’s extremely careful about not falling back into the cycle of addiction… He never drinks (he’ll even sit away from his teammates if they’re drinking at a bar or restaurant), doesn’t do any drugs (including steroids), and has a new daughter (three in all). =)

And I doubt he’s “edgy” about talking about his past. He does that pretty much every opportunity he gets. He and his wife had a question and answer session at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington and they both honestly answered everything (I wasn’t there but a friend was). He’s done interviews for magazines and articles, and he’s never NOT come clean about his past.
And one of the things he ALWAYS stresses is the importance of never starting drugs and if you are using them, it’s time to quit.

So, no. I really didn’t agree with a thing you said.

Don’t judge him by his past, judge him by what he’s doing here and now.

    By the last round.
    He never blew it.
    Nor he would want to.
He wanted this and is sad he was physically tired to finish the performance off.

he is a beast. there r only 3 possible reasons: he got tired, he got too cocky, or the 71 year old clay council got tired.

    nervous? tired?

  6. angelosdad says:

Did he blow it? They guy hit 28 home runs in one round. maybe he was tired. Maybe the cumulative score from all the rounds should determine the winner.

  7. hellspawn says:

The word on Hamilton, is that the kid from inception into baseball was the closest thing to “the natural” that scouts had ever seen. They’ve marvel at his raw talents & natural skills. To be away from baseball for that long & come back & still have the ability he’s shown is remarkable. His ability is & never has been the question, he at 25 is still capable of a remarkable career. With the right support & success maybe he can forge ahead & be as good as all the scouts have said,,time will tell..its a great story but its up to him to write the ending…

  8. toddvioland says:

well living in cincy i get to watch him every night on tv. whether he pinch hits or starts in the outfield. im telling you the guy is a beast. watch him hit BP…he delivers monster blast after monster blast. i wanna say he was the number one overall pick in the 99 draft and since then been a heroin addict. my hats off to him for breaking that addiction and coming back to baseball. its funny cause his wife keeps all the money and gives him an allowance to go out and spend…which i guess is good so he can’t get pulled back in the drug world. he’s got great mentors in cincy like griffey and dunn. they guy looks like he’s been in the league for 5 or 6 years. great stroke, power to opposite field and as someone said earlier a 5 tool player. the reds need to move dunn to first and start griffey, freel and hamilton in the outfield. just remember he can still get rookie of the year!!!

  9. mark m says:

As talented as Ken Griffey Jr. was in his prime if he keeps his head on straight!

  10. coloradojazzman01 says:

I think Hamilton will be great as long as he stays clean. He has gotten off to a great start. I mean his first major league hit was a home run. In yesterdays game they put Freel at 3B so they could have both bats in the lineup. I can see that happening a lot more frequently. Look at the power and speed that those two had in the 1-2 combo. Hamilton is here to stay in Cincy.

  11. adam333975 says:

Well, both Rocco Baldelli and Aubrey Huff say that Josh Hamilton is the most talented baseball player that they ever seen. Not just hat they have played with or against, EVER SEEN!!!!!!!

  12. Ivy likes Good Charlote says:

    He is a superb player

  13. Pepper says:

Have faith and he will be fine..I am sure they have tests set up and counseling available to him..I am sure there are mandatory measures included in his comeback. Just have a little faith my man….all will be fine!

  14. BeatlesLover says:

my favorite team is the Cardinals, but i can admit that Matt Holliday is overrated. he is a good offensive player, but he sucks at defense. does anyone remember last year? we were playing in the series and the winner would go to the NLCS, and he missed a pop fly that he should have gotten. because of that, we lost the game and the chance to go to the world series.
i think that he was in the home run derby because Tony didnt want Pujols to be injured.

  15. Ivan (Pudge) Rodriguez says:

Hamilton took 8 years 2 get 2 the MLB after being draft 1ST overall in 1999.
Holliday took 6 years 2 get 2 the MLB after being draft 210TH overall in 1998.
Hamilton was a guy who was supposed to be the best hitter around 2002-2003 but end up in 2008.
Holliday was a guy who was supposed to be a minor league player till around 2008 but broke out in 2005.
