Is Canada’s “Family Day/Louis Riel Day/Islander Day” placed to coincide with Presidents Day on purpose?

What is the purpose of “Family Day”?

Question
Also called “Louis Riel Day” in Manitoba and “Island Day” in PEI.

Was this holiday created SOLELY to correspond with the US holiday of Presidents’ Day? Do we need to copy the US on everything?! I assume we’ll have a day off on July 4 eventually…

Answered by Ray
According to the Ontario Ministry of Labour:

The Government committed to add a holiday in February within the first year of its new mandate.

Ontarians work very hard and they deserve more time to spend with the people they love. The addition of Family Day means that Ontarians who are covered by the Employment Standards Act, 2000 (ESA) holiday provisions are entitled to a minimum of nine public holidays with public holiday pay.

I think it’s because there were no public holidays between New Year’s and Easter…

It used to be called Heritage Day in Ontario. We have July 1 already. Why celebrate another country’s holiday?

“Family Day” has nothing to do with “Presidents Day”.

Basically it was Dalton McGuinty’s way of guaranteeing himself re-election.

Not every province has it, and not every company within the provinces that do have it, observe it.

I remember when sunday was family day… but the almighty dollar has changed all that.

Believe it or not, Dalton McGuinty did not invent family day. Many people from Ontario don’t realize we are the third province to have family day. It started in 1990 in Alberta to celebrate families (and give a long weekend in February, because it’s a long time between Christmas and Easter). And you can bet that the people who started it were thinking about heterosexual mom, dad and their kids kinds of families.

Saskatchewan got it next in 2007, then Ontario in 2008.

You could think about it as an Alberta conservative plot to make Canada more like the USA, but that could be stretching it a bit. Although Steve Dubya would love to have George Bush’s baby if it didn’t involve gay sex. Maybe Steve will put it in the throne speech coming right after the Olympics end.

Should the President have a 17 day holiday with his family over Christmas in Hawaii?

Question
The President after all has a young family and he needs to recharge his batteries to continue improving America
Answered by Bob Smith
Why not make it until November of 2012? At least this will prevent him from doing more damage to the country until he is voted out of office
Answered by scott g
As long as he is out of washington, I am good with that.

Yes,

Most Presidents do take a Christmas holiday.

Why should President Obama be ANY different.

Answered by Comicbook Reader
Every other president had a Christmas holiday. I fail to see why Obama should be denied one.

Seriously, you are complaining about a paid day off to spend with FAMILY???????? It was created in Saskatchewan as a moral boost as there were no stat holidays after Christmas until Easter and when Easter was later in the year (as we know it can be as early as end of March or as late as end of April) it created a LONG stretch for workers. Our winters are typically long and dark and cold so the day off was a welcome addition to break up the stretch! It was not meant to copy the USA however, obviously they realized long ago breaking up the winter with a day off for people to spend together was a good idea! If you care to work, have at it I guess. I know I will enjoy the time off!! Having it the same day across Canada (and maybe the USA) facillitates easier travel for people who have relatives in other provinces (and the USA) in that they all have the same day off! Happy Family, Louis Riel and Island Day all!!!!!

Edit – Alberta may have had it first, but we did not have to follow suit!! That was the rationale given at the time (and the fact that the NDP also was coming up to an election soon as well). As one poster said, it seems not every province has it! AND thank you to the poster who understood my post!! I did not mean it was ORIGINALLY created in Saskatchewan but rather talk about why it was created in SK!!

Family Day was not created in Saskatchewan as the poster above me said. It was indeed begun in Alberta a long time ago. It was a long stretch from Christmas to Easter without a holiday and families are important.

Unfortunately the malls and stores aren’t closed on Family Day so a lot of us miss out on that “special” day.

  3. random rambler says:

From the SK government website: “Regular public holidays enhance people’s ability to create better work-family balance, something the province supports through Department of Labour’s Work and Family Unit. Research shows that healthy work and family balance also helps employers, by making staff recruitment easier, increasing retention rates, decreasing absenteeism, and strengthening commitments to place of work.”

And to pinkpiglet: I don’t think stagemaniac meant that this holiday was originally created in Saskatchewan. To me, her statement was about the reasoning behind the creation of it in SK.

I’m willing to extend it out a bit, to like… forever.

Oh heavens yes! Please, Mr. Obama, go on a 17day vacation. That way we don’t have to see your face standing in front of a teleprompter and lying to us. And if you’re on vacation, you’re not “working” and we come out way ahead on the expense account. So by all means, PLEASE take another vacation.
