Is there housing on Alcatraz Island “The Rock”?

Question
I know it may be a silly question, but I believe it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen, and it’d be a dream to live there. I know that when it was functioning, the workers would live on the island. Is there any housing there now? Atleast for tour guides or anything?
Answered by frinh96221
There used to be, so it’s still there, but not available for rent or purchase.
Answered by Javier G
No. It’s now a state park.
Answered by ajtheactress
About the only people who actually get to sleep on The Rock these days are the occasional reporters or the night guards.

Although it is a lovely fantasy to live there, everything…including water has to be ferried in. That is one of the reasons the prison was finally shut down.

some prisons have nices views of water or sunset. Valhalla prison has a nice veiw of woods. Alcatraz Prison is on a beautiful island. Leicester Castle looks like a big castle. Dartmoor Prison in Devon looks like farmlands. Dorchester Penitentiary in New Brunswick, Canada has nice colors. Some other prisons has nice symmetrical cells like a diagram.

Does Alcatraz need a Donald Trump make over?

Question
This blited eyesore, not fit for dragons, ghosts or anything else, sitting out there on a beautiful island like a monstrous albatrous around the neck of Calif. taxpayers just waiting for a Donald Trump to blow it up and put a casino amuzement park out there with free round trip ferry rides out of Oakland and Valleo, whoodeedoo. Calif. would be debt. free. LOLLOL! Where are you Donald? I intensely dislike that hugh dump.
There could be something beautiful out there, what a view. Sorry seniors Iam just venting. Oh, I get so mad sometimes!
Daiseymae you would have to be in top physical shape to get up there most of it is blocked off due to decay, ect.
Answered by mcburger
it needs a restoration as a landmark
Answered by daisymae
It is a part of history and if I ever make it to California I would love to see the prison. I thought there was a charge for admission with proceeds going to keep up the property?
Answered by justme
Yes Donald, I hugely respect the way his conducts his businesses, and the absolute ability he has for the finest details.l My children say I drive them mad because of that. but that is how great men like him, do business, and achieve success.,and it seems as if he is very fair to his staff. But expects the best from them. beautiful holiday resort would be the answer, but a Casino, no. Gambling has caused so much heartache in families, we don’t need any more. He could also, have a drug rehab there. Think I will write to him. It’s is big enough for both. Good question.

We would be better off to make into a resort.

Urgent help traveling to California?

Question
I am travelingto San Francisco late November and i need some help on my travel plans. I don’t want to stay in San Francisco alone, but i have extended family East of Los Angeles. I really would love to tour some of the attractions in SF such as the Golden Gate and Alcatraz, or even Yosemite national park but would also love to spend most of my time with my family up in LA. I’m ttravelingfrom Australia, so i don’t want to spend more on airfare tickets. I was thinking of either taking a one way tour by train or bus up to LA and then stay with my family for a while and come back to SF by just a normal bus/train ride or vice versa. Any guidance in a couple days tour or suggestions on ttravelingto and from LA while still being able to see and stop and beautiful sites would be greatly appreciated. I’m also on a tight budget, so i’m flexible to options by bus or train.
I can’t drive due to a medical condition, so cars are out of the option.
I really prefer SF over LA, it’s more my style, but the main problem is that i’m travelling alone and finding somewhere to stay alone isn’t that safe. I’m in California for 13 days approx.

Contact the family you have near LA – they will be able to get the info you need, as it is nearest to them

San Francisco is a must see. It may not be the largest but it’s quite possibly the most beautiful city in the US. Go to the Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39, Ride a Cable Car, See Lombard St. & maybe Coit Tower.

However, it’s quite a far trek from SF to LA (about 7 hours by car and 12 by Train) to you might want to be sure to work that travel time into plan if you only have a couple days.
Your best bet would be to fly from SFO to LAX in about 1 & 1/2 hour flight time for 49$ on Virgin.

i dont know how old you are, but if you’re old enough, it probably would be worth checking into renting a car. If you pick it up in SF and drop it off at SF i don’t think it would be too much more than bus or train tickets and it would give you the ability to do much more site-seeing. I would go to Yosemite on the way down to LA and take Rt1 up the coast on the way back. Perhaps a family member would be willing to meet you in SF and go around to the sites with you. You can look into tour companies, just do a search for ‘san francisco tour company’ I think you may be shocked by the prices though… Try consulting a travel agent before you leave. They might know some good deals, or some tips to help you out too, It seems like only old people go to travel agents anymore because younger people think they are going to find better deals online and can do it all themselves…yes this may be true, but for nominal price difference (if any at all) sometimes it’s best to go to a professional who has experience and knows the ins and outs; especially when you’re doing a huge trip like Australia to the states. alone. it doesn’t hurt to check a few more options
Answered by Johnny
Only realistic option is renting a car. Road Trip! There may be some good deals. I always use alamo.com.

You can do a very nice road trip ( http://www.tripcart.com ) from LA to SF with Yosemite in the middle.

Has someone missed the role it played in wars gone by and the true history it holds? It is not made to be a glitz to add to the glitz of the bay–it is meant to be shrouded in clouds much of the time and left as is for future generations to experience the ultimate final prison destination. Donald would exploit it file a bankruptcy and get a new young wife to take over the administration of the defunct mess.

Sounds like a good idea. Now try and get some degree of unanimity on this from the various pressure groups in the Bay area. Having served as one of the military representatives on the Trans-Bay Disaster Planning Council a quarter of a century ago, I can tell you the spirit of disputation has only gained strength since then. It’s the only place I know of, with the exception of central Athens in Greece, where three guys could be discussing politics and you would have four different opinions being expressed.

Given his limitless bank account he could really make it into a showplace. It could be fabulous if he would be willing to take it on and if the state of CA would sell it to him for that purpose.

*_~ So glad that you’re considering San Francisco for your vacation.

Ok. If you fly Virgin American or southwest airlines, you can get cheap tickets from SF to LA.

Try to stay in Union Square. http://www.unionsquareshop.com/
When you arrive at the airport, take the SFO air train that goes around the airport, then you’ll get off when you see Bart, take Bart to Powell Station (should be about $ 6-9 and it takes 20 mins ) that’s Union Square.
    http://www.bart.gov/ for schedule..

I just love the weather and the diverse culture here!! Traffic can be hectic but still bearable. Public transport is great! You can always take Bart, ferries, bus, taxi or cable car etc. However, if you don’t have much time or want to travel beyond the city – I think a car would help a lot. Yes, you have to pay for parking, but save you time to go more places faster..

Try the “City Sightseeing Open Top Bus Tour” which is about $ 30. “This unique open-topped bus tour of San Francisco includes four different routes, the Downtown Loop, the Golden Gate Loop, the Park Loop, and the Night Loop.” You’re free to hop on and off as often as you want on the downtown loop.

Embarcadero is wicked nice, and it’s not THAT far, so you could really just walk down it to the Ferry Building. http://www.ferrybuildingmarketplace.com/
On Saturdays they do a nice farmer’s market and you can get lots of good stuff. Walk down to Pier 39.

I have a suggestion if you want to go to Yosemite which I highly recommend as there is nothing in the world like it. Take a 1 to 2 day bus tour to Yosemite. There are several companies that do this out of San Francisco. For more info on this, just google Yosemite tours. Believe me, you would not regret seeing Yosemite.
