There’s a Black History Month, a Gay Pride Month and even a Shark Week. Why no Jesus day/week/month?
You know, the holidays celebrating the birth of Christ, and the Crucifixion and Resurrection.

What is your opinion on Black History Month?
If we just bought textbooks that are younger than we are, could we eliminate the whole racist categorization of “it’s your month” and just have history and herstory?
sorry to inform you franky but its not really up to your school, february is national black history month.that means the entire united states.

Why is there gay pride week, black history month?
Same with black history month. I understand that the black people were slaves and treated terribly, but should we not move on? It’s just segregating themselves.
And please don’t say I’m racist or homophobic. I accept all people, that’s why i don’t understand these celebrations of race and sexual orientation.
Please don’t attack me. I kind of understand the black history
Month a little better. I will admit to being ignorant.
But the gay pride thing still baffles me. I know here in canada gays have more
Right than in the u.s, but like one of the answers on this question Said, why
Do gays dress up in g strings and act obscene. If you ask me
That’s not a great way of getting your rights.
It would be pretty cynical to have white pride week/history month
If you don’t understand these celebrations as you call them, why do we have to honor Columbus day when he really didn’t discover this land? Why do we have Presidents Day. We all know what they did? So it’s okay to have these days to acknowledge white America but black people can’t take pride in themselves and neither can gays? Pleaseeeeeee!
@Dom – and your point? There is reverse racism but tell me how hard your race has had it in life compared to black people! Bet you can’t answer that one can you Dom?
Peace xx
Do we really need things like Black History month and Hispanic Heritage month in schools?
As always, thanks for stopping by!
Christians are scum enough for meddling with fact, now they condemn a society.
When will you Nazis ever stop?

Umm, what is Christmas? Why is that the longest federal holiday? If I am not mistaken, the only holiday in February (black history mo.) is Presidents’ Day celebrating two white men (Lincoln and Washington).
Because, there is 52 weeks in a year. And most “religious” people go to church every Sunday. That makes 52 days. Plus the other 3-30 days depending on if you’re catholic or not. So you actually get 50-80 days of Jesus. Also consider that you can “worship” any day you want. So it could actually be 364-365 days of Jesus.
again, christmas and easter. these two are legal holidays.
The other answers have already provided you with examples of Christian holidays we already have in America. However, you’re confusing ethnic/cultural traditions with religions. The nation and various states/localities choose to celebrate certain cultural traditions belonging to some of their citizens in order to recognize those who were often ignored or even discriminated against in the past. Thus, there’s the Year of the Woman or Year of the Child but no Year of the Billionaires or Year of the Corporate CEO’s!!
There is Christmas, Holy Week, and Easter. All these days center around Jesus Christ.
Ever heard of Christmas or Easter? What a silly question.
what country was founded on jesus? none that i know of. you must be very ill informed about the world around you. dont feel too bad, most christians dont really know much about history, or science, or reality.
i was going to argue with that a little until your suggestion that we just update the textbooks. the only reason there was ever a need for “black history month” was that with the textbooks we grew up with it was “white history year.”
What about white history month?! Where I live, we’re a minority.
ok so i feel that if thats the case there should be a white history month and a hispanic history month, a native history month, and an asian history month what does everyone else think?
While I understand the importance of recognizing MLK (I think it’s great he has his own day – deservingly so) and the civil rights movement, I think it’s just as racist to have a Black History Month (imagine if we had a White History Month), BET (Black Entertainment Television) etc. Does it truly bother me? No, that’s silly – I’m tolerant and not in the least bit racist, but I do think there is a bit of a double standard now.
Yeah – I think when there are months, books, tv stations, etc. devoted to just blacks (or any race) it is still segregation. Although I have no problem with teaching the history of any given race – but none is any more or less important than the other.
I think any history month or day is completely wrong if it excludes any category. There shouldn’t be a black history month, a gay/lesbian day, a female day, etc. without a white history month, a straight day, a male day, etc.
We all know that will never happen- so all these special days/ weeks/ months need to be thrown out the window and everybody needs to be treated equally.

I feel that these recognition months would not be necessary if our schools did not take such a euro-centric approach to history. There is no Pre-Columbian history taught and any history we have of the Spanish occupied south and of the French occupation of the Midwest and the northern territories is almost zero. Our history books are written from the perspective of a WASP. American history is much more rich than our school boards want to admit. In my state, high school students only study history 2 of the 4 years. In sophomore year they learn “World History,” which as it turns out is only Western European History. In junior year they learn American history starting at the revolution: nothing earlier.
If our history books took a decidedly less narrow point of view, these recognition months would not be needed at all.
okay they first of all they do have other months that recognize other minorities, the point of recognition month is to recognize the different achievements of different ppl and to grow and I dnt see how that is racist….
They already have white pride months… when they only had white presidents, when white men make disproportionately higher wages for the same (or less) amount of work, when you look in the media how they force white skin color as the standard of beauty, etc… etc…
it’s white pride all day everyday.
@ SuperCee: There’s plenty of anti-caucasian racism among minorities in NA.
Probably because of past repression. The scales sometimes swing both ways, before they settle out. Soon, mankind will simply accept all for who they are, there will be no need for any affirmation. Or, destroy itself.
Because unfortunately gays are getting abused on, hated on, and discriminated against in all areas of life!
So the issue needs to be raised somehow to give hope to the gays out there, and raise awareness for equality among other people to tackle the hate!
‘Gays’ dont dress up in g strings and act obsene, those few induviduals you seen doing that did!
I seen a straight man being ‘manly’ getting drunk and fighting random people, does that mean all ‘straights’ do that? Nope!
In the last month there has been countless number of gay suicides, yesterday a gay 15 year old boy called Jamie killed himself from the stress of the hate he got!
This is why we need pride months, to get people to face up to the hate that very much so exists, and to get rid of it and become equal!
=) =) =)
Yes we do. In this small town most children don’t go to school with blacks or hispanics until high school. And that is not an exaggeration.
We don’t need any month devoted to a race or religion.
It’s only fair….afterall, every last Thursday in November, the schools close to celebrate inviting Native Americans to dinner and stealing their land day.
Seriously, though, this country is formed on many cultures and I think all should be recognized equally in their contributions to it.
O NOES! How dare we appreciate minorities!
[/sarcasm]
No we don’t. I feel that by doing so we are only emphasizing these specific topics but then ignoring them otherwise. There should be a concerted effort to integrate different aspects of history consistently through instead of relegating them to designated times, essentially
That goes for gay rights and the history that plays into American history as well.
It’s all American history and there should be many different aspects and perspectives represented.
There is a movement in the Texas school system to change the books to erase any mention of any contributions by any figure who is not white. Any doctor, scientist, inventor, discoverer, explorer who was any other race is to be erased by claiming history is too long or the books would be too thick.
So while I do not need a month to know all races contribute to society, to prevent total whiteouts of history, there is a need for these.
I should point out that Texas sets the standards for what books are used in public schools across the country. Has been for decades.
what about white history month or better yet Brett Favre history month
I am black and I would like to see black history month vanish. Since when is black history not American history and why is it not all taught together, instead of making it sound like two different countries.
Gay history month? Christians need to be vilified for trying to oppose gay rights. Gay people pay all the same taxes straight people pay, and they are equal citizens, so why the oppression?
Perhaps we should have a month dedicated to people like you? We’ll call it the “ignorant c.u.n.t” month.
Yes we do, because black history and even to an even lesser extent, Hispanic history is not taught enough in schools.
No, just let history be flippin’ history. Pretty soon we’ll have People Who Prefer Dogs to Cats Month, and Watermelon Rind Wearers Month. No wonder there is so much division among people these days. Recognition of every single special interest group that rears it’s head does nothing positive but give us yet another reason to separate ourselves or define ourselves apart from the rest of society. Give it a rest already!!
