what are some good movies adapted from Charles Dickens novels?
Question
I am not talking about the boring Christmas Carol movie that someone comes out with almost on a yearly basis.I am trying find some adaptations of Tale of Two Cities,Oliver Twist, and maybe David Copperfield.I seem to like his and Edgar Allen Poe’s writing the most, more so than the Shakespeare stuff.

There’s the musical Oliver!

And there’s a more recent “darker” Oliver Twist

Muppet Christmas Carol is amazing!! It is so not boring!!!
But Nicholas Nickleby is good with Anne Hathaway and Christopher Plummer.
BBC made Little Dorrit recently with the guy that played Darcy in Pride and Prejudice(2005), that was really good!!!

~ Great Expectations (1998)
A lot of people don’t like this film because it is so different from the original novel. The plot is more simple in the film and is quite different from the book. What the movie does succeed in is capturing a certain intensity and beauty. Great direction an intriguing script make this film more compelling the original novel. I have read the book and seen the movie. While the novel is of course a classic, the film has so much more resonance.

What are some movies with themes and events similar to those in Great Expectations by Charles Dickens?
Question
It’s for a project in communication arts class. I have a huge project to do and I just need a little help. I have to write a rationale for each, but when I think about movies I’m drawing blanks. Thanks!

Like (tragic)love story,ambition, social conflict….? I’ll try with:
-Notebook
-Terms of Endearment
-Blue Valentine
and probably “Titanic”, I think it has the same themes(crime, ambition, tragic love story, social class…)

Well I read both the movie and saw the book for Great Expectations and a theme that really stood out for me was the coming of age and Pip’s realizations at the end. A great coming of age movie and book is The Outsiders, the coming of age theme is especially highlighted in the reference to Robert Frost’s poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay”. Enjoy (I wish my homework assigments were watching movies!)

The 1999 version of David Copperfield is quite good! It features (among other fine actors) Daniel Radcliffe, Maggie Smith, and Ian McKellen. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0167872/
It is also long, and fairly true to the book.
